Renault Lighting
The National Road Traffic Regulations, as published by Arrive Alive, require a dipped beam with a cut-off that runs diagonally up to the left, and state it "shall not deflect to the right". A headlamp built for a left-hand-drive country does exactly the opposite: it throws its bright zone at oncoming drivers and leaves the left verge dark. Aiming it lower does not fix that. It is the first thing we check.

Lighting, explained
Lighting is the one category where a part can fit perfectly, work perfectly, and still be the wrong part — because of which way it aims.
South Africa's National Road Traffic Regulations
South Africa's National Road Traffic Regulations, as reproduced by Arrive Alive, require a dipped beam that shows a sharp, clearly defined cut-off line diagonal to the left and horizontal to the right, and state that the intersection of those cut-off lines shall not deflect to the right. That is the beam pattern for driving on the left: it lifts the light up over the kerb-side verge while keeping it low on the side where oncoming traffic is.
A headlamp built for a left-hand-drive country
A headlamp built for a left-hand-drive country does the mirror image of that. Fitted to a South African car it throws its bright zone straight at drivers coming the other way and leaves the left verge — where pedestrians, cyclists and animals actually are — in the dark. Aiming it lower does not correct the pattern; it just gives you a badly aimed wrong-handed beam. Worth knowing that some modern projector units can be switched between left- and right-traffic patterns, so it is not universally hopeless, but it has to be switched deliberately and most units cannot.
The second thing that makes a used headlamp wrong is trim. On the Kiger, cars.co.za lists LED headlamps with daytime running lights on the Intens grade specifically. On the facelifted Triber, carmag reports that the flagship Iconic introduces LED projector headlamps along with LED DRLs and LED foglamps. Two cars of the same model and year can therefore take completely different lamps.
Practical note
Practical note: a lamp that is misted inside is a failed seal, not dirt. Water in a headlamp corrodes reflectors and kills bulbs, so a used unit with condensation in it is not a bargain.

The questions we ask before we price lighting
South Africa's road traffic regulations require a dipped beam whose cut-off runs diagonally up to the left, and state it shall not deflect to the right. A lamp built for a left-hand-drive country does the mirror image — bright zone into oncoming traffic, kerb-side verge left dark — and aiming it lower does not correct the pattern. After that it is a trim question: LED headlamps were a higher-grade item on the Kiger and the Triber.
In plain terms, the call you have to make is whether a lamp aims the right way for South African roads, before whether it fits — and the model name on the boot lid is not enough information to make it.
Include the trim level, and a photograph of the lamp currently on the car when you ask us about lighting. Two questions up front beats a part that has to be couriered back.

Lighting — what customers usually ask
Can I fit a headlamp from an imported left-hand-drive car?
We would strongly advise against it. South Africa's road traffic regulations require the dipped beam cut-off to run diagonally up to the left and specify that it shall not deflect to the right. A lamp made for right-hand traffic does exactly that, which dazzles oncoming drivers and leaves the kerb-side verge unlit. We should be precise about one thing: we did not find a South African source stating it is an automatic roadworthy failure, so we are not claiming that. We are saying the beam pattern is wrong for our roads and that is reason enough.
How much does it cost to replace a headlight?
We quote per enquiry, and the spread on this part is wide enough that a published figure would mislead almost everyone. A halogen unit off a base model and an LED projector unit off a flagship are not in the same bracket at all — on the facelifted Triber, for instance, the LED projector headlamps are an Iconic-grade item. Tell us the model, the year and the trim and we will price the lamp your car actually takes.
Does my Renault have halogen or LED headlamps?
It depends on the trim, and on this range the split is real. cars.co.za lists LED headlamps with daytime running lights on the Kiger Intens; carmag reports LED projector headlamps, LED DRLs and LED foglamps on the flagship Iconic version of the facelifted Triber. For several other South African Renaults we could not find a published per-trim split at all, so we check rather than assume. Look at the lamp itself, or send us a photograph.
Can I replace a headlight assembly myself?
On most of these cars it is a reasonable DIY job — often the bumper or a section of trim comes off, then a few bolts and a connector. Where you should stop is aiming: a headlamp that is not correctly aimed after fitting is dangerous to everyone else on the road, and getting it right needs a proper beam setter rather than a wall and an estimate. Most fitment centres will set the aim quickly and cheaply.
Why does my headlight keep misting up?
Because the seal has failed somewhere, or a breather is blocked. A little condensation on a cold morning that clears once the lights have been on is normal. Standing water, or misting that never clears, means moisture is getting in and staying — and that corrodes the reflector and shortens bulb life. Sometimes a cracked lens or a perished bulb cover is the culprit and can be fixed. Often the unit is finished.
