A heater core is a small radiator behind your dashboard, and when it leaks the symptoms are unmistakable once you know them: a sweet smell inside the car, a windscreen that mists up and will not clear, an oily film on the inside of the glass, damp carpet on the passenger side. It is a cheap part behind an expensive job, so it is worth being certain before the dash comes out.

Heater Cores, explained

A heater core is a small radiator tucked behind your dashboard. Hot coolant runs through it, the blower pushes cabin air across it, and that is where your heat comes from. When one leaks, it leaks coolant inside the car, which is why the symptoms are so distinctive.

You smell it before you see it

You smell it before you see it: a sweet, slightly sickly smell through the vents. Then the inside of the windscreen fogs with a greasy film that wipes into smears rather than clearing. Then the passenger carpet is damp. Coolant vapour condensing on the inside of the glass is the giveaway — ordinary misting clears when you put the demister on, and this does not.

Now the honest part, because it will save some of you a large bill. A wet carpet is not automatically a heater core. Blocked scuttle drains under the windscreen put water into footwells routinely, and cars.co.za records that on some early first-generation Dusters a channel in the underbody let water drain into the rear footwells — a body drainage fault with nothing to do with the heater at all. The test that separates them costs nothing: if the water is clear and odourless it is rain, and if it is coloured, slippery and sweet it is coolant.

On how big the job is, we would rather be straight than dramatic. On some cars the dash has to come out entirely; on others, including the Sandero body, owners report the dash plastics coming off relatively quickly. We have not found a source pinning down the procedure for each South African Renault, so we are not going to quote you hours we cannot support.

How you know heater cores are on the way out

A sweet smell through the vents, strongest when the heater is on
A greasy film on the inside of the windscreen that smears instead of clearing
Damp or soaked carpet on the passenger side
Coolant disappearing with no leak anywhere under the bonnet
The heater blowing cold although the engine is at temperature
Windows fogging up persistently in weather that does not explain it

Recognise any of that? Tell us the model and year and we will go and check what we can get hold of for you.

Choosing heater cores for a Renault without guessing

Strip away the catalogue language and what you are actually choosing between here is whether you are replacing what leaked, or what made it leak.

This range has one documented cooling weakness and it is worth knowing before you order anything. cars.co.za reports that the plastic thermostat housing on three-cylinder models tends to warp over time — generally past 100 000 km on the Clio IV — and leak coolant, and its Sandero guide reports the same thing. A leak at the top hose on one of these cars is often the housing rather than the hose.

So we price heater cores against your specific car, not against a badge. Send through the engine, the mileage, and where you can actually see coolant, and we will come back to you on what fits , what it will cost, and how soon we can have it moving.

Heater Cores — what customers usually ask

What happens when a heater core fails?

Two things at once. You lose cabin heat and demisting, which is a safety problem in winter. And coolant escapes into the cabin, which means the engine is quietly losing coolant — so an ignored heater core can end up as an overheating problem. If yours is leaking, the level in the expansion tank is worth watching closely until it is fixed.

How do I tell if I need a new heater core?

The combination is what identifies it: sweet smell, greasy misting on the inside of the windscreen, damp passenger carpet, and coolant loss with no engine-bay leak. Any one alone might be something else. Check the fluid itself — coolant is coloured and slippery between the fingers, rainwater is neither. That single test separates a heater core from a blocked drain, and they cost very different amounts to fix.

Can a heater core be flushed instead of replaced?

If it is blocked, yes, and it is well worth trying first. A core that is clogged rather than leaking gives you a heater blowing cold with dry carpets, and a back-flush often restores it. If it is leaking, flushing achieves nothing — a hole does not close. So establish which of the two you have before spending anything.

How long does a heater core last?

We have not found a figure worth quoting, and it would be misleading anyway: they usually fail because of what is in them rather than how old they are. Neglected coolant, mixed coolant types, or a radiator sealant that found its way into the narrow passages will kill a heater core long before age does. Keeping the coolant fresh is the meaningful preventative.

My carpets are wet. Is it definitely the heater core?

No, and this is the most common misdiagnosis in this whole category. Blocked scuttle drains under the windscreen are a frequent cause of wet footwells, and cars.co.za notes an underbody channel on some early first-generation Dusters that drained water into the rear footwells. Smell and touch the water first. If it is clear and odourless, look at drains and seals before you let anyone quote you for a dash-out job.

Not sure which heater cores you need? Send the VIN and we will match it. Worth a look as well: Renault Scenic used spares.
