Renault Diesel Particulate Filters For Sale

A DPF warning light usually means the filter needs to regenerate, not that it has failed. The difference between those two decides whether you are buying a clean, a sensor, or a filter.

The parts a Renault DPF fault actually turns out to be

A DPF warning rarely means the filter alone. These are the components a proper diagnosis lands on.

Diesel particulate filter

DPF

Duster
  • A ceramic brick in the exhaust that traps soot — a local specialist puts it at up to 85% of the particles leaving the engine
  • Built as a sealed canned unit that looks much like a catalytic converter, so there is no serviceable element inside to throw away
  • Classified a serviceable item by most manufacturers, which is why it is normally excluded from a warranty or service plan

Priced against your VIN, because two of these that look identical often are not.

Differential pressure sensor — illustrative image, not the actual unit you will receive
SensorPopular

Differential pressure sensor

Pressure sensor

Duster
  • Reads exhaust pressure before and after the filter; the ECU measures the state of the DPF through this sensor and nothing else
  • The difference across the filter is what tells the ECU how loaded it is and when to start a regeneration
  • A faulty sensor can throw the car into a DPF warning with a filter that is physically sound — which is why it is worth testing before anyone buys a filter

Priced against your VIN, because two of these that look identical often are not.

Exhaust gas temperature sensor — illustrative image, not the actual unit you will receive
Sensor

Exhaust gas temperature sensor

EGT sensor

Duster
  • Monitors exhaust temperature, which the filter’s probes track alongside back pressure
  • Regeneration is a temperature event: a normal exhaust runs around 400°C and has to be raised to roughly 600°C to burn the soot off
  • Without a correct temperature signal the ECU cannot safely start or finish a regeneration at all

Priced against your VIN, because two of these that look identical often are not.

EGR valve

EGR valve

Duster
  • Recirculates some exhaust gas back into the engine, and the mechanism contaminates with soot over time
  • A valve stuck open increases the particulates, soot and carbon being fed into the filter — so it blocks the DPF faster
  • This is why it is commonly diagnosed and replaced alongside a blocked filter rather than after the filter has been paid for twice

Priced against your VIN, because two of these that look identical often are not.

Sensor plumbing

Pressure sensor hose set

Hose set

Duster
  • The small-bore pipes that carry exhaust pressure from the filter up to the sensor
  • Split, perished or soot-blocked pipes give a false pressure reading, so the car reports a DPF fault with a healthy filter
  • Supplied separately from the sensor itself, and by far the cheapest thing on this page to rule out first

Priced against your VIN, because two of these that look identical often are not.

Cleaning and forced regeneration — illustrative image, not the actual unit you will receive
Workshop service

Cleaning and forced regeneration

Service

Duster
  • Ultrasonic cleaning removes trapped particulate and returns a soot-loaded filter to normal operation
  • A forced regeneration is workshop-initiated on the diagnostic tool, rather than something the car decides to do
  • Costs considerably less than a replacement filter — but only works while the blockage is soot rather than ash

Priced against your VIN, because two of these that look identical often are not.

There is no price on the cards above, deliberately. A used unit is priced on the donor vehicle it came out of, so the honest answer only exists once we know which car yours is — which is why every button here asks for your details rather than showing you a number we made up.

Renault DPF Price Guide

The variants below are the ones that come up most on South African cars. We could not find two independent local sellers advertising a figure for any of them — the note under the table explains why, and it is worth reading before you accept a quote.

VariantWhat it goes in
1.5 dCi (K9K)Renault Duster, 2018 to 2025. The only fully-evidenced South African application, and the car cars.co.za reports clogged filters on as being by no means uncommon.
2.0 dCiTrafic Panel Van and Passenger, 125 kW and 380 Nm, still on sale new here — the last Renault diesel in the local range. Whether the SA-spec van carries a filter is not something we can confirm, so ask before you assume either way.
Regeneration temperatureA normal exhaust runs near 400°C. Regeneration raises it to roughly 600°C by injecting fuel after combustion, which is what burns the trapped soot away.
What shortens its lifeShort stop-start journeys, because the exhaust never gets hot enough for long enough to burn the soot off. A car that does school runs and nothing else will block a filter far sooner than the same car doing highway miles, whatever the odometer says.
Soot or ashSoot burns off during a regeneration. Ash does not, and it accumulates permanently. Which of the two has blocked your filter is what decides whether cleaning is worth doing at all.
Warranty statusTreated as a serviceable item by most manufacturers, so it usually falls outside both the warranty and the service plan. Owners are caught by this more than by anything else here.

The questions we ask before we price diesel particulate filters

Strip away the catalogue language and what you are actually choosing between here is whether your car runs a catalytic converter or a diesel particulate filter.

Renault South Africa's own maintenance wording lists the exhaust as a serviced wear item rather than something the warranty covers. What hangs under the car depends on the fuel: the petrols run a catalytic converter, and the 1.5 dCi runs a particulate filter that cars.co.za says clogs on the second-generation Duster by no means uncommonly.

So we price diesel particulate filters against your specific car, not against a badge. Send through the model, the fuel type, and which section has actually failed, and we will come back to you on what fits , what it will cost, and how soon we can have it moving.

What a DPF warning on a Renault diesel actually costs you

The most useful thing to know before you spend anything is what the dashboard is telling you. One DPF light means the filter is loaded with soot and wants to regenerate — burn that soot off at temperature — and a long run at speed will often do it. A second light alongside it, the engine management light, means a regeneration has failed and the filter is past cleaning itself. One light is a job for this week. Two is a job for a workshop, and the bill is a different size.

South African diesel is part of the story and it is worth being precise rather than dramatic about it. Engineering News records that low-sulphur diesel here is specified at 50 ppm and normal diesel at 500 ppm, that the ultra-low 10 ppm grade is not yet in force because the refinery upgrades are prohibitively expensive, and that high-sulphur diesel is known to influence the emission of fine particulate matter. More particulate means more soot for the filter to trap, and more frequent regenerations. It also notes that contamination between grades means actual sulphur content varies between 50 and 500 ppm in practice, so two identical cars on different forecourts do not have the same experience.

Whether your Renault has a filter at all is a fair question and the honest answer is that it depends on the car. Local sources disagree with each other on how widely they were fitted here, and we would rather say that than give you a model year that turns out to be wrong. What is well established is the 1.5 dCi Duster sold between 2018 and 2025, which is where nearly every enquiry we take comes from. That car is out of its service plan now, which is the other thing owners discover late: a DPF is treated as a serviceable item and is normally excluded from both the warranty and the plan.

Two practical points before you enquire. The first is that a DPF fault is often not the filter — a failed pressure sensor, a split sensor pipe or an exhaust leak will produce the same warning on a filter that is perfectly sound, and the only way to separate them is a live-data scan that reads actual pressure and soot load. The second is that something upstream usually caused the blockage: a stuck-open EGR valve, tired injectors dumping unburnt fuel, or a turbo leaking oil into the exhaust. Fit a filter without finding that fault and you will block the new one too.

It is worth saying out loud that if you have already asked around, you have almost certainly been told to have the filter gutted. That is the common advice on South African owner forums and it is what a good number of local shops sell. We do not supply or arrange DPF delete or removal work — it is emissions-defeat work, and it is not what this desk is for. The reason to diagnose first is not moral, though: a fair share of these faults turn out to be a sensor, a split pipe or an EGR valve, and those are far cheaper to fix than the filter is to remove. Find out which one you have before you commit to anything irreversible. If what you want is the filter cleaned, the sensor tested or the part replaced properly, that is the conversation we are here for.
