Renault Koleos Spares
Two Koleos generations have reached South Africa and they have very little in common. The first took its running gear and its all-wheel-drive system from the Nissan X-Trail of the day. The second launched here in September 2018 to replace the Kadjar, with a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four and a CVT. In September 2021 Renault dropped all-wheel drive from the local range altogether, so on this model the year settles the drivetrain question.
Local engines: 2.5 naturally aspirated 4-cylinder (second generation) and 2.0 dCi (first generation).

How we pin spares to your particular Koleos
What shifts across the years
There is no single Koleos for parts purposes — two generations with almost nothing in common, the X-Trail-derived first one and the CMF-CD second that launched here in September 2018 to replace the Kadjar have all been sold here.
On this model the year settles the drivetrain, and it settles it absolutely. Renault dropped all-wheel drive from the South African Koleos range in September 2021, leaving Expression and Dynamique in front-wheel drive only, so from that point the local range was front-wheel drive and nothing else. Anything four-wheel-drive-specific — the rear driveline, the coupling, the associated mounting and cooling hardware — belongs to the cars built before that, and asking for it on a later car is asking for something that was never fitted.
The generation split is the bigger trap, though. The first-generation Koleos and the second are not a facelift apart; they are different vehicles on different platforms, sold years apart, with different engines. cars.co.za wrote of the first car that much of what lies under its skin comes from the Nissan X-Trail, and that its all-wheel-drive system was Nissan-sourced. The second launched here in September 2018 on the CMF-CD platform, specifically to replace the Kadjar that Renault had stopped importing.
So “Koleos” on its own is not enough information to start from — the year is what turns it into a car we can source against.
The Koleos takes its hardware from the Nissan X-Trail
Useful to know: the Koleos takes its hardware from the Nissan X-Trail — cars.co.za wrote of the first-generation car that much of what lies under its skin comes from that Nissan, and that its all-wheel-drive system was Nissan-sourced — and the second generation sits on the CMF-CD platform alongside the X-Trail and the Kadjar. On the second-generation car that goes further than platform talk, and this is the sentence worth having: reviewing the Koleos in 2021, cars.co.za wrote that it uses the same naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine you will find in the Nissan X-Trail range.
That is an engine-level statement from a South African title, not an inference from a shared floorpan, and on a model this thin on the ground it matters — it gives us somewhere real to look when there is simply no Koleos in a yard to take the part off. The same article notes the Koleos was offered with only that one engine locally, which was true as at late 2021.
Everything outside the engine stays a starting point rather than an answer
Everything outside the engine stays a starting point rather than an answer: the Koleos is the biggest of the three and platform sharing is not a part number, so we check the specific item against the specific car rather than reasoning from the family tree.
What we check on spares
- •The generation code — the Koleos parts list splits on it
- •Which engine you have; this one was sold with 2.5 naturally aspirated 4-cylinder (second generation) and 2.0 dCi (first generation)
- •The engine code off the plate, or the VIN if you cannot find it
- •Where the car sits either side of its facelift
Locally, the Koleos is mostly a family SUV doing long provincial runs, so what we chase for it tends to be drivetrain and cooling rather than the parking damage a city car collects. It is a low-volume model here with a high parts value per item, which means it is worth taking the time to confirm the generation properly rather than ordering twice. That is the wear pattern we source against, and it is why we ask what the car does rather than only what it is.
What we source for the Koleos
If you are not certain which Koleos you have, send the VIN off your licence disc and we will work it out.
