Renault Captur Spares
The J87-series Captur was sold here from May 2015 and came out of Renault’s Valladolid plant in Spain, not from India or Romania like most of the range. Underneath it is a Clio IV, which is useful when we go looking. The catch is the gearbox: the 1.2 turbopetrol was dual-clutch only until the August 2017 facelift added a six-speed manual, so engine and gearbox are not independent choices on this car.
Local engines: 0.9 turbopetrol 3-cylinder, 1.2 turbopetrol 4-cylinder and 1.5 dCi turbodiesel (K9K).

What a parts desk needs to hear about your Captur
What shifts across the years
The Spanish-built J87 cars sold here from May 2015, in pre- and post-August-2017 facelift form are all still on the road locally, and they do not share one catalogue between them.
Establish the gearbox before anything else on a Captur
Establish the gearbox before anything else on a Captur. The 1.2 turbopetrol was dual-clutch only here until the August 2017 facelift added a six-speed manual, so on a pre-facelift car the engine and the transmission are effectively one choice. The cars.co.za buyer’s guide is direct about how that EDC behaved: hesitancy at low speed, particularly where a driver was yielding rather than stopping, with the transmission still hunting for a gear when the driver wanted to go — and, in its own words, several instances of EDC faults and outright failures.
The same guide records premature brake wear on numerous local cars, stop-start trouble on early J87 examples, worn and failed timing chains on the 0.9 three-cylinder, and cabin trim on pre-facelift cars that creaks, rattles and generally feels below par. Read together, that is a fairly precise map of what a used Captur actually needs. The derivative timeline is short but it matters. The car launched here in May 2015 as the 0.9T Expression, the 0.9T Dynamique and the 1.2T Dynamique EDC; a Sunset Limited Edition ran to only a hundred cars in South Africa during August 2016; the 1.5 dCi arrived that same month; and at the August 2017 facelift the Blaze replaced the Expression.
A hundred-car special edition is worth flagging early in an enquiry
A hundred-car special edition is worth flagging early in an enquiry, because trim specific to it is genuinely scarce and we would rather tell you that up front.
The Captur is built on the same B platform as the Clio IV
Useful to know: the Captur is built on the same B platform as the Clio IV — cars.co.za puts it that the J87 “shared much with its hatchback sibling” — and, unlike most of the local range, it came out of Renault’s Valladolid factory in Spain rather than India or Romania. Both halves of that matter to us. The Clio relationship means a Clio IV of the right year is the first place we look when a mechanical item is scarce, and the two cars shared engines here as well: the 0.9 and the 1.2 turbopetrol appear in both.
The Spanish origin matters in the opposite direction, because a used Captur part offered locally has come off a European-built car, and the specification of those did not always follow what India or Romania sent the rest of the range.
What we check on spares
- •The generation code — the Captur parts list splits on it
- •Which engine you have; this one was sold with 0.9 turbopetrol 3-cylinder, 1.2 turbopetrol 4-cylinder and 1.5 dCi turbodiesel (K9K)
- •The engine code off the plate, or the VIN if you cannot find it
- •Where the car sits either side of its facelift
Locally, the Captur is mostly a school-run and commuting crossover that spends its life in traffic, which is precisely the duty cycle that finds out a dual-clutch and a set of front brakes. Both of those show up in the local fault reports for this car, so the wear pattern and the known weak points point in the same direction — which is unusual, and it makes a Captur enquiry easier to pin down than most.
That is the wear pattern we source against, and it is why we ask what the car does rather than only what it is.
What we source for the Captur
If you are not certain which Captur you have, send the VIN off your licence disc and we will work it out.
